🥋 Beginner’s Guide to Aikido

Ōtautahi Aikido – Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand

Welcome to our Dojo

Nau mai, haere mai! At Ōtautahi Aikido, we welcome people of all backgrounds, ages, and fitness levels. Whether you’re looking to improve your wellbeing, learn a martial art, or explore a peaceful approach to conflict, Aikido offers something unique.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes harmony, fluid movement, and non-aggression. It’s not about fighting—it’s about learning to neutralise conflict while protecting yourself and others.

What is Aikido?

Aikido (合気道) means “The Way of Harmonising Energy.” Developed by Morihei Ueshiba, it blends traditional Japanese martial arts with a deep philosophy of peace and personal growth. Rather than using strength, Aikido uses circular movements, timing, and balance to redirect energy.

You’ll learn how to fall safely, blend with attacks, and move with calm focus—skills that apply both on and off the mat.

What to expect as a Beginner

Your first month is free, and no experience is needed. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

In your first few sessions, you’ll:

  • Wear comfortable clothing, long pants are best (no gi required to start)
  • Learn how to roll and fall safely (ukemi)
  • Practice basic techniques like throws and joint locks
  • Train with supportive, experienced partners
  • Develop balance, timing, and awareness

Aikido is non-competitive, cooperative, and deeply rewarding. Everyone progresses at their own pace.
